One Glance Is Enough: The Next Step Toward the Big Update

Chairlift, bar down, phone out: a quick check of your messages. That’s exactly where you’ll now find ski tracking live stats, no hunting for the app. And you can see at a glance that it’s still running.

It’s the first visible piece of a bigger rebuild. And it gets us a good deal closer to the next big update.

What’s happened since last time

Back in September we told you that we rebuilt tracking from scratch. And that it was mostly groundwork.

Since then, the next piece has landed: your stats are now calculated by the same core on Android and iPhone. That used to happen in the visible part of the app. Which goes to sleep the moment your phone is in your pocket.

Now your numbers are made in the same place tracking runs, and they’re there even when the screen is off. From the outside, you won’t notice much yet. But it makes things possible that weren’t before.

Ski tracking live stats: on Android, one glance does it

Until now, the notification only told you that tracking was running. For anything else you had to find the app and open it first.

From version 1.11, the notification shows what you actually want to know: top speed, downhill distance, vertical descent and a running timer. All in the units you picked in the app.

Take a break and it says “Paused”. And if Android closes the app in the background, you’ll read “Recording continues” and know nothing is lost.

And on iPhone?

Honestly: for now, this display is Android only. We’re not promising anything here that isn’t finished.

You’re not going home empty-handed, though. The new stats core is in the iPhone app just the same. And on both systems, the timer now starts with the first GPS signal. It used to start only once you moved. If you were still standing at the lift after hitting start, your time came up short.

Two honest notes

The values in the notification catch up every few seconds, not every second. That’s on purpose: for a look on the lift, it’s plenty.

We tested the display on a range of screen sizes. But notifications look a little different on every manufacturer’s phones. If something isn’t right on yours, please tell us in the feedback portal before you leave a bad review.

Where all this is heading

Last time we kept quiet. Today we’ll give away a little more: we’re building a friends feature.

Skiing is rarely a solo sport. For your numbers to reach more than just you one day, they have to be made while your phone sleeps in your jacket. That’s exactly what the new core can do.

We’re not saying when yet. Only this: we’re making big strides.

What do you need to do? Nothing.

Grab version 1.11, start tracking, and pull down your notifications on the next lift. Your existing sessions and stats stay exactly as they are.

First snow isn’t far off. Get the update, wax your skis. See you up there. ⛷️
